In our Karma in Action series, we want to highlight inspiring individuals and organizations who are making a difference in the world around us. Read on to hear about how the Tree People are making a difference in the community with one of our Karma Girls, Michelle Moy.
When we think of trees, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Is it the shade to shield us from the hot UV rays that we experience in the warm weather? Or does it bring back childhood memories of our tree house sitting up there and serving as our own little getaway? Well, there are a lot more reasons why these beautiful tall plants benefit our daily lives than we may think. Trees conserve energy, save water, provide food, prevent soil erosion, and stop water pollution. If you’re curious to learn more about the benefits that trees offer us, read here!
Let us introduce you to Tree People which is a nonprofit environmental organization that educates adults and children on the impact trees make in the urban community. Their mission is to “inspire, engage and support people to take personal responsibility for the urban environment, making it safe, healthy, fun and sustainable and to share the process as a model for the world.” For over 40 years, they have planted hundreds of trees and continue to establish a Functioning Community Forest in every neighborhood! Now that’s impressive!
Karma Girl Michelle volunteered with Tree People a while ago. She spent the day planting trees in a residential neighborhood and learned about specific nutrients in fertilizers that sustain the growth of trees. She got to connect with other volunteers and be a more proactive person for the local community. Based on her time with them she says, “It was such a rewarding experience getting to see firsthand how trees really affect our lives. Tree People do an excellent job educating the public on why we need to maintain and respect the urban environment. As a young woman, I definitely feel empowered and being able to give back to Mother Nature is the ultimate experience!”
Earth Day is coming up on April 22, 2013 so be sure to mark your calendars! Why not take this opportunity to give back to what Mother Nature has provided us by spreading karma back to her? Tree People currently covers the Los Angeles, CA area so if you live in this region, be sure to spend a day working with this inspiring organization! If you aren't in Los Angeles there are still a lot of things you can do to help, check out earthday.org for some ideas. Hopefully soon we will see Tree People expanding to all cities nationwide so we can all have a cleaner ecosystem!
